Many people are familiar with the big ways to be environmentally friendly, also known as “going green”. Commonly thought of going green trends include purchasing an environmentally friendly car that either gets extremely good gas mileage or uses an alternative fuel source, installing solar panels to provide power to your home or business, purchasing locally grown and organic fruits and vegetables, and of course the ever present go green mantra of “reduce, reuse, recycle”.

But there are other ways to go green that you may have never thought of or heard of. One such was is to make your own environmentally friendly household cleaners. While this may sound like a big inconvenience, read on to find out just how simple and easy making your own household cleaners can actually be. You may even enjoy the process and you will definitely feel better about yourself when you are done!

The first step you should take in your do it yourself household cleaner project is stock up on the essentials. If you have the following items in your home and ready to use, you will be much more likely to use one of the homemade cleaner recipes here. And the good news is that all of these items are relatively inexpensive, so you won’t have to break the bank to go green in this way. Here is your shopping list: baking soda, borax, distilled white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, lemons, olive oil, vegetable based soap (also called liquid castile soap), and washing soda (found on the laundry isle). You should also pick up a couple of empty spray bottles for mixing and dispensing your homemade cleaners.

One great all purpose cleaner involves simply combining 1/8 cup of Borax and one quart of water. Borax disinfects, bleaches, and deodorizes so this concoction makes for a great way to clean your kitchen and bathroom surfaces without any harsh chemicals or damage to the environment. Simply spray on this solution and wipe with a cloth, just as you would any other store bought all purpose cleaner. You can also make a larger amount in a pail using ½ a cup of borax and one gallon of hot water. You can use this large amount to mop your floors or any other large surface cleaning.

If you have wood floors to clean, you can mix ¼ cup of distilled white vinegar with one gallon of warm water. Distilled white vinegar disinfects and breaks up dirt while still being gentle enough to use to clean your wood floors. If you are cleaning linoleum floors, simply make the solution a little stronger. Use ½ cup of distilled white vinegar mixed with one gallon of warm water. After mopping one of these solutions onto your floor, rinse with regular water. Also, make sure you are using distilled white vinegar as opposed to other vinegars (such as apple cider or red vinegars). While these vinegars may have similar properties, they could also discolor certain surfaces.
